I've been reading up on wheels and cockpits a lot over the last few days, Logitech lose points due to gear driven FFB which can cause dead-zones in the FFB when the wheel is centered, and the fact the base and wheel aren't modular, but the pedals for the G290 are decent enough and include a clutch. Most wheels include paddle shifters, but a separate shifter feels better for some vehicles. It's also miles better than the cheap toy-like Logitech shifter, which tends to break easily according to reviews, and feels kinda cheap to use. Its a little bit expensive, but its made of solid metal and should last you years. If you want a separate shifter for more imersion the Thrustmaster TH8A is great, and you can pair it with any PC wheel.

Mounting it to a solid desk can be OK, otherwise you might need to look at an Omega GT race cockpit, a Wheelstand Pro or a playseat. The DFGT is very plasticy, but makes a decent entry level wheel to see if you enjoy it enough to go on and spend a bit more money on a higher end setup.Īlso think about where you will mount the wheel. I went from a Logitech Driving Force GT to a Logitech G290 (which is the wheel designed for PC and XBox 1 - the G29 is the wheel designed for PS4) for the improved pedals and a better build quality. I once had the Ferrari 458 Spider wheel for Xbox One, a $100 wheel, and it sucked. Just make sure whatever you buy has legitmate Force Feedback and at least 900 degrees of rotation, or it's not a real wheel. Has a hybrid of belt driven and helical gears apparently.Ĭan't really say anything about Fanatec, great wheels apparently but also come at a premium. T150 is a cheaper version of the TMX/ T300 and more toylike as a result, but still a decent wheel. However, they tend to be less reliable then Logitech and more prone to breakdowns. The Logitech G29/G920 are bascially slightly updated and reskined versions of the G27 (though much higher priced with the shifter being an optional purchase), while the Thrustmaster is more modern with the belt drive. If money is not much of an issue, probably best go with a Thrustmaster TMX/TX or T300.

Another great option is the G25, it is almost the same as a G27, just has less buttons on the wheel than a G27. The Driving Force GT is an OK wheel as well, but has plastic pedals, a crappy sequential shifter, and no paddles (they are just simple digital buttons where the paddles should be). Perhaps you can find some new units on clearance discount as well since they no longer manufacture them and are trying to get rid of inventory. > The future of racing games? Virtual reality and motion rigsīut I’ll qualify this hands-on preview by saying that Project Cars, just like many other recent simulation-biased racing games, will probably require you to invest extra in a wheel and pedals setup (at the least) in order to enjoy it to its full.Įven if Project Cars 2 doesn’t quite match the same levels of geeky simulation offered by titles like iRacing, rFactor (and those using the rFactor engine) or Assetto Corsa, the gameplay here is realistic enough that for maximum control, finesse and enjoyment, you need to be able to make the fine inputs that only a wheel and pedals can offer. If you really want to save money, a used good condition Logitech G27 is the way to go. You’ll also lock up wheels and understeer off, or overcorrect and find yourself heading rapidly towards a tree, or an armco, or a pit wall, or some other solid object.Īmusingly, I’d just been told that the Project Cars team doesn’t believe a realistic racing game should be punishingly difficult, and to the team’s credit the various driving aids - stability control, ABS, traction control - do turn even the wildest virtual beasts into something you can tame and then use to win the vast variety of different races available to you.

Use a gamepad to play Project Cars 2, Slightly Mad Studios’ upcoming racing game for PC, PS4 and XBox One, and you’ll be thankful for the developers’ new focus on tyre models and driving aids.īecause play without those driving aids and even with more natural, progressive slides, you’ll spin.
